Generation Gap

I've always loved this song. The '80s video for Mike and the Mechanics' "In the Living Years" is dated, but the lyrics are beautiful, a son telling of his yearning to talk again with - try again to understand and be understood by - his dad who has long since passed away. The lead singer's voice is amazing. Even more amazing, he sounds as good - if not better - live, 20 years later in this performance. Older, heavier, dressed in biker garb, he hits the notes perfectly, with a touch of soul.

The song is long and well written. Two of my favorite verses...

You say you just don't see it
He says it's perfect sense
You just can't get agreement
In this present tense
We all talk a different language
Talkin' in defense.

So don't yield to the fortunes
You sometimes see as fate,
It may have a new perspective
On a different date,
And if you don't give up, and don't give in,
You may just be OK.
